What are veterinary exams for?

Veterinary exams may be routine or non-routine. Routine exams are centred on prevention and ensuring your pet’s well-being. During these checkups, our veterinarian will carry out a full physical examination of your pet to determine their overall health. This is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have about your pet. The vet may also take the opportunity to discuss topics such as vaccination, nutrition and habits or behaviour.

During a non-routine consultation, the vet will focus more on a specific problem, such as pain in a limb or abnormal symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting. The vet will attempt to determine the cause of the pain or the symptoms and may propose various tests to make a diagnosis. The aim of these consultations is therefore to identify a problem and implement a treatment plan.

Why are routine exams important?

Vets recommend annual checkups to prevent certain issues from arising and to diagnose certain illnesses early. Your pet may be fine without regular exams, but there is a risk that your pet may get sick and require more intense treatment because an illness was not diagnosed until it was at a more advanced stage. Routine checkups can therefore help you save on vet bills in the long run, in addition to offering your loyal companion a better quality of life.
