Dental Care

Regular brushing and frequent cleanings can help prevent gum disease.

Oral and dental disease is unfortunately very common in cats and dogs. While these diseases may sometimes go unnoticed by owners, they can be quite painful for pets and can lead to more serious health problems. Good oral and dental health is possible through daily brushing and frequent vet exams.

What dental care is available at the veterinary hospital?

Your pet is likely to have their teeth cleaned at least once in their lifetime, to maintain good dental health. Dental cleaning takes place under general anesthetic to avoid injury or stress for your pet. This procedure is carried out using an ultrasonic device that removes plaque and tartar from both above and below the gumline.

This is also an opportunity to conduct a thorough examination of the mouth. Our vets will take X-rays of the teeth to look at the roots and determine whether any extractions are required.

Finally, the teeth are polished to remove any plaque, stains or rough patches left on the teeth after cleaning.

How do I protect my pet’s oral and dental health?

The best way to protect your pet’s oral and dental health is to brush their teeth regularly. This should be done daily or every second day in order to remove plaque before it hardens and becomes tartar. Specially designed brushes and toothpastes are available in our store.

There are also several dental diets available on the market that feature larger kibble and are specially formulated to prevent tartar buildup.

Finally, certain approved treats and chew sticks can help cats and dogs maintain good oral and dental health.
